Few domestic tools are as intimate and as important to us as those connected with eating, cooking and serving. Details like volume, balance and weight — the tactile characteristics of the material and the way in which the tools lie in the hand — all contribute to the total impression of the meal.
“Designing a collection of cutlery and kitchen tools is the ultimate design project. It involves the functional aspects of ergonomics and production, to find the right balance and weight. But also artistic expression — strong visual, emotional and tactile qualities. It’s a collection of everyday jewellery.”
Jesper Ståhl’s Stockholm cutlery combines streamlined matte-polished stainless steel with smooth black handles. Jesper Ståhl has also designed a cutlery tray in bamboo, specially for his Stockholm collection.
Stockholm cutlery is made by one of China’s leading producers of kitchen knives which they supply to restaurant kitchens all over the world. Rather than being made from punched blanks — the commonest form of cutlery — the steel is hot-forged and then fitted with a mat black thermoplastic handle. This fine example of skilled metal work is included in our New Scandinavian Kitchen range.
Cutlery: Made of stainless steel and POM (polyoxymethylene). Dishwasher safe.
Cutlery tray: Bamboo. 44 × 31 cm (17"× 12"). Hand wash only.
Jesper Ståhl runs his own design studio in Jönköping in southern Sweden, working in a broad field of assignments, ranging from furniture and lighting to gym equipment and award winning drum kits. Jesper has a degree in innovation engineering as well as a masters degree from the Royal College of Art in London.
