In Scandinavia, light is everything. We live in constant conversation with it — through endless summer evenings and long, dark winters where the sun becomes a distant guest. The way we illuminate our homes is not just about visibility; it’s about emotion, rhythm, and the simple poetry of living well.
Scandinavian lighting is about clarity, simplicity, and atmosphere. It enhances interiors, invites reflection, and shifts with the seasons. As autumn arrives and daylight fades, light becomes our companion — soft, sculptural, and full of warmth.
At Design House Stockholm we aim for lighting that combines sculptural aesthetics with practical function — lights that not only illuminate but become part of the room’s character. Each piece designed not just to brighten, but to breathe life into a space — merging tradition and knowhow with innovation, emotion with precision.
The Fireplace Lamp by HYBE DESIGN TEAM embodies that philosophy. A living sculpture of light, it flickers gently like a modern hearth, casting organic, dancing shadows across the room. “Something very old and traditional meeting the modern,” as Jun Takeda describes it — a memory of ancient fireplaces reborn in design.
Then there’s the Block Lamp by Harri Koskinen, a modern classic born from a student’s imagination in Helsinki. A glowing Edison bulb encased in glass “ice,” it transforms the ordinary into something magical — warmth suspended in transparency. Its immediate success, later immortalized in MoMA’s permanent collection, reminds us how timeless design often begins with simple curiosity.

Luna Collection by Alexander Lervik continues this lineage of invention. A globe so perfect it seems to float — a moon indoors. Through innovation and craftsmanship, Lervik eliminated the visible hardware that once disrupted the purity of light, achieving a seamless sphere of iridescent glow. “Quite simple at the end,” he says, “once you figure it out.”
And finally, Kalo by Axel Bjurström and the Cord Lamp by Form Us With Love reinterpret functionality as beauty. Kalo, inspired by the classic cobbler’s lamp, offers soft, downward light with effortless grace. Easy to pick down and wash in glass parts in the dishwasher.
Cord Lamp, in turn, celebrates what others hide — the cord itself — transforming a technical necessity into a sculptural statement.
Together, these designs capture the essence of Scandinavian lighting: thoughtful, tactile, and deeply human. They remind us that light is not merely to see by, but to live within. When the days grow shorter, these luminous forms keep our interiors alive — a quiet celebration of design, craft, and the enduring warmth of northern light.
