Fireplace Lamp

Both sculpture and light, the Fireplace Lamp redefines design by merging form and function. Encased in a slotted cylinder, its dimmable glow casts shifting light and shadow across floors, tables, and windows. The mouth-blown glass, suspended upside down over a base resembling crossed logs, evokes the warmth and flicker of a real fire. As the viewer moves, so does the interplay of light, creating a dynamic and immersive experience. The HYBE DESIGN TEAM has crafted an object that goes beyond mere functionality, making memory and movement an integral part of its design.

“I was fascinated by the beauty of glass—whether intended for water or whiskey—and how we could transform its use,” explains Jun Takeda, founder and CEO of HYBE DESIGN TEAM. “The transparency of the glass beautifully reflects the warmth of the light, while the small slits allow the glow to shimmer and dance, creating a softer, more organic feel than a purely industrial solution.”

Designed with dark Nordic winters in mind, the Fireplace Lamp brings warmth and atmosphere to any setting. Whether used as a reading light or to create a soft, glowing ambiance, it embodies Takeda’s philosophy of bridging past and future in the present. His work as a designer and interior architect often juxtaposes ancient wood tables with modern spaces, transforming recycled materials into meaningful design statements.

First unveiled as part of an installation at the Rossana Orlandi Gallery during the 2023 Salone del Mobile, the Fireplace Lamp evokes both the nostalgia of a crackling hearth and the familiarity of everyday objects. Its sculptural presence remains striking even when unlit, taking on new dimensions at dawn and dusk.

“Light existed before humans; it’s in our DNA,” says Takeda. “We live by light, we need light to survive.” But light is more than mere illumination - it carries memories of fireside gatherings, sun-drenched beaches, and twilight’s gentle fade. The Fireplace Lamp challenges conventional notions of lighting, offering not just a source of brightness but a piece of living art that illuminates both space and soul.
